Ashby appointed Calif. State Senate majority assistant whip

Today freshman California State Sen. Angelique Ashby was appointed the majority Assistant Whip. The appointment was made by Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins (San Diego).

“I am humbled that President pro Tempore Atkins has put her trust in me to serve as Assistant Whip,” Ashby said in a statement announcing the appointment. “I thank her and Senate Leadership for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the leadership team. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to move California forward.”

As the Assistant Whip, Ashby will be responsible to help navigate the party through their legislative priorities, ensuring progress for Californians. Whips are typically responsible for ensuring members of a political party, in this case, Democratic state senators, follow party policy and are viewed as enforcers.

Ashby won the State Senate District 8 seat, which includes all of Elk Grove and portions of Sacramento, in the November election over former California Insurance Commissioner and Assemblymember Dave Jones.

The Majority Whip is Sen. Lena Gonzalez (Long Beach), and the other assistant Whips are Senators María Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) and  Susan Rubio (Baldwin Park).
