Candidates Hit The Trail

First out of the gate this morning was Elk Grove Council Member and mayoral candidate Gary Davis who held a pancake breakfast followed by a park clean-up at the Ida Fleming Park in east Elk Grove. Davis, who is in his second term has made civic projects such as the cleanup a personal mainstay since being elected in 2006.

Typical of the supporters attending the event was Kevin and Angela Speace, both of whom have deep roots in Elk Grove and live near the park. The Speace's said they are backing Davis for his dedication to numerous causes benefiting children and his support for the construction of the recently opened St. Maria Goretti Church.

"I like that he is for helping the kids," Angela Speace said.

In addition to Davis, three others candidates who are seeking to be elected to the Elk Grove Unified School (EGUSD) district board, Carmine Forcina, Steve Ly and Tony Perez, were at the clean-up.

On the other side of town local business owner and mayoral candidate Greg Higley also sought out votes this morning as he passed out bottled waters to soccer parents at the Bartholomew Sports Complex. Higley said he make several good contacts at the sporting event and enjoyed watching the parents cheer on their children.

"That's what Elk Grove is all about, community and family," he said.

Today's Multicultural Festival at the Elk Grove Regional Park was a fertile campaign area as EGUSD candidate Steve Ly, Elk Grove mayoral candidate Lynn Wheat and congressional candidate Dr. Ami Bera all spoke with potential supporters. (See separate story on Bera, Lungren campaign activities here.) Other politicians seen working the crowd but not up for reelection included Cosumnes Community Services Director Rob Brewer and Bobbie Singh-Allen, who was recently appointed to the EGUSD board.

Wheat, who is running a bare-bones grassroots campaign said she too made several good contacts at the festival and was encouraged by the feedback she received. "People are quite receptive to hearing someone talk about the issues facing Elk Grove," she said.

As a newcomer to EG and someone who pays a hefty amount in property taxes, just wondering why a council person is asking neighbors to come out and clean up a park. Seems this has also happened at another park. Why is this not being done by the city...are we short on funds and going by way of Stockton? Help me out here.....

This is a political ploy for positive publicity and a photo op. Nothing more...nothing less.
and you are correct, with the way our city expends $$$ friviously, we may just be headed Stockton's way.

This is one in a series of park clean up projects done by Davis over the past two years.

Parks are run by the CCSD and, yes, these projects use volunteer labor to save tax dollars.

However, the primary purpose is to get residents out of their homes and investing time in their local neighborhood park. It is more of a community building project than anything.

Dang you folks are cynical. Politicians do something and they are vain. They do nothing and they are lazy....

Imagine, an elected official that really cares. What a concept!

How about Davis actually cleaning the park instead of posing for photos?? If his intentions were ultruistic, the press didn't need to receieve multiple press releases about this event....If you are really about the community, go about your volunteer work quietly...no need to toot your own horn or draw in the media. This was nothing but a photo op.

AMEN to above statement....volunteering for your community shouldn't involve the press

Just as a point of clarification, the Davis campaign did not send a press release per se regarding this event. It was posted on Davis' FB and is part of a regular newsletter Mr. Davis emails that is not related to his campaign apparatus.

Perhaps that is true, however that being said, when any resident receives an email from Mr. Davis who is runnng for Mayor, it is not likely anyone double checks the exact address...it is assumed it is "political" and he knows that. Also from the article it is very clear he is playing politics at the event. Fine line he is treading!
