Detrick will be Vice Mayor

The Elk Grove City Council selected council members Sophia Scherman to be the next mayor and Steve Detrick as vice mayor at last night's city council meeting.

Although the council’s deliberations were done fairly quickly, a number of people, including some who criticized Detrick earlier in the meeting, urged the council not to nominate Detrick for mayor.

Detrick addresses critics

City charter commissioner Jake Rambo said that based on the ethics charges leveled against Detrick the council should not nominate him for mayor. Rambo also urged Detrick to decline the any nomination for him to be mayor.

Rambo went on to say that Detrick himself had asked for the resignation of former city charter commissioner Christopher Orrock several weeks ago based on allegations. “You need to live by your own actions,” Rambo said.

Pulling out a cliché he had used in a prior city council meeting regarding the proposed St. Maria Goretti Chruch, Dan Brennan accused Detrick of Chicago style politics. “That type of leadership is not appropriate for Elk Grove,” he said.

Defending Detrick was Connie Conley who said unproven accusations should not play into the nomination process. “If we base our decisions on allegations, that is a sad state,” Connelly said.

After Scherman had been nominated by council member Jim Cooper, Detrick took the opportunity to address his accusers. “I know I can look at myself in the mirror and sleep at night,” Detrick said.

Detrick went on to say that while he had made mistakes and took personal responsibility for them, he stood by them. “I stand behind every decision I make,” he stated.

Not backing down, Detrick also bluntly commented on the political theater on display during the council meeting. “I find it interesting how this was orchestrated,” he concluded.

In nominating Detrick, Cooper showed support for his fellow council member regarding the accusations made. “I don’t see any intent there,” Cooper said.

It appeared as though Detrick was headed to being Mayor until the ethics charges were leveled against him.

Obviously he thought so or why else did he vote against Sophia?

Can you say caught with your hand in the cookie jar? a little bitter?
