A recently closed poll on Elk Grove News resoundingly shows support a Sacramento Grand Jury investigation on threat allegations leveled against Elk Grove City Council member Pat Hume. With a total of 63 respondents, 71% (45) agreed that the grand jury should investigate the matter while 29% (18) said it should not.During the last city council meeting council member Jim Cooper suggested that Hume be investigated following a complaint from a female Elk Grove citizen that Hume hade made threats against her. Hume has maintained he did nothing wrong and that an investigation by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s office cleared him.Hume, Scherman playing Russian RouletteDespite the district attorney’s findings, Cooper said that based on his law enforcement experience, he felt the threat made by Hume warranted an ethics investigation. Hume and his political mentor, Elk Grove Mayor Sophia Scherman resisted Cooper's request for an ethics investigation.Ironically, had Hume and Scherman not resisted an ethics violations initially sought by Cooper, the matter may have settled internally with little more than a slap on the wrist. Should the Grand Jury take up the matter and conduct an investigation of the threat allegation leveled against Hume, the matter could have deeper implications for him as he seeks a second term.Hume and Scherman’s stonewalling could come back and kill Hume’s fledgling political career. It seems the duo have just entered a game of Russian Roulette – something no doubt either wants to be involved in.
