It is that time of year where people across our country will celebrate our nations independence with parades, picnics and fireworks. For most people Fourth of July will be a fun filled day, but for others, the day's festivities will end with a visit to the hospital or a visit from fire or police officials.

To this end,Elk Grove's Cosumnes Fire Department is urging local residents to comply with laws regarding the use of fireworks.

Zero tolerance

“We’re focused on two aspects of fireworks safety issues to help protect our communities," George Apple, Assistant Chief-Fire Marhsal, Cosumnes Fire Department said. "Working with the Elk Grove and Galt Police Departments and other area agencies, we’re taking a zero-tolerance approach to individuals who use or transport illegal fireworks."

Apple also pointed out that in light of two household last year as the result of improper disposal of fireworks,  great care need to be taken when fireworks are disposed of after use.

"We’re also focusing our efforts on helping residents handle fireworks properly after they’ve been used, Apple said. "This includes allowing them to cool for several hours and soaking them in water before throwing away in trash cans or other containers.”
