A Sacramento teen's attempt to rob an area fitness center was foiled early Friday morning by several of the center's patrons.

According to Elk Grove Police reports, the 16-year-old male suspect from Sacramento entered the 24 Hour Fitness Center located on Elk Grove-Florin Road and simulated having a gun inside his sweater and demanded an employee turn over any cash. When the employee explained to the suspect that he did not access the register, the suspect then demanded his cell phone and the employee refused to comply.

At about the time the employee discovered that the object the suspect claimed was a gun was actually a water bottle, the suspect grabbed the employee and punched him in the face. Several of the fitness center's patrons noticed the attack and intervened.

Responding officer took the suspect into custody and transferred him to juvenile hall.
