In a crowd not seen since its incorporation in 2000, the
city council chambers at the Elk Grove City Hall were overflowing with well-wishers tonight for the swearing-in ceremony of four Elk Grove City Council Members.
The four taking the oath were incumbent members Mayor Gary
Davis and Pat Hume, both of whom were reelected unopposed. Also taking their oath
were District 4 City Council Member Steve Ly, who was elected to a four-year
term, and Darren Suen, who was appointed to the two-year term to fill the
District 1 vacancy created upon former Elk Grove City Council Member Jim
Cooper, who was elected to the Ninth District of the California State Assembly.
The ceremony also acknowledged the service of Cooper the other
outgoing council member, District 4 Council member Bob Trigg. Davis thanked
Trigg for stepping into the district’s vacancy two years ago and noted his long
service to the community as a council member and previously as the Elk Grove
Unified School District’s superintendent.
“You served us well, “ Davis said.
The council also honored Cooper, who was the last original
council member from the city’s 2000 incorporation. In that seminal election,
Cooper came in first place in the 20-plus candidate field and as such, was Elk
Grove’s first mayor.
Noting his ascension to the Assembly and several projects in
the city’s near future, Cooper quipped he was a little jealous and said there are great
things ahead for the city.
“Tonight is a little bittersweet,” Cooper noted. “I love Elk Grove, it is an awesome place.”
