Going Dark - Elk Grove City Councilmember Sergio Robles closes access to Instagram account after DUI arrest
Before his arrest by Elk Grove Police officers, Robles frequently posted his exploits on his Instagram account. Not surprisingly, hours before his early morning arrest, Robles was tagged on an Instagram video with two companions celebrating in what appeared to be an intoxicated state at the AAPI Market Night event in downtown Sacramento on May 19.
Since his arrest, Robles has not posted on his Instagram account. Robles also has a Facebook page, which appears to have none of his party-themed exploits documented.
Interestingly, Robles left his Instagram account open, which enabled readers to provide documentation of his activities, including the video he posted hours before his arrest.
That all changed in the last few days. Robles has now gone dark on Instagram, at least to those who were not one of his 1.895 followers and has restricted access.
Elected official blocking access is nothing new. Perhaps Robles is channeling - former President Donald J. Trump blocked several high-profile people who criticized him.
It should be noted Robles did not use Instagram for official communications. Instead, he posted a video like this on that account, so he does not appear to be blocking access to the official city of Elk Grove business that should be open to all.
Nonetheless, hiding the social activities he formerly shared with the world could indicate a few things. The best case scenario is Mr. Robles learned it is unprofessional for an elected official - regardless of their age - to show yourself whooping it up and acting like a "bro."
Additionally, even though Robles has restricted access, we have already heard from readers who are also followers who have said they will monitor his entries. Maybe Robles is denying access on the advice of counsel, but to be sure, people are watching.
Or is he simply trying to hide his actions from curious eyes in the hopes he can continue to post party times for his followers and friends?
We'll learn soon enough if Robles, who hasn't expressed genuine contrition and continues to classify his DUI arrest as being cited, simply quit posting his activities while he continues acting like a 20-year-old frat boy.
Curious and good-government people are monitoring you, Mr. Robles.
The story was updated to reflect that Mr. Robles was tagged on Instagram, and did not post the May 19 video on his feed.
