Ambition, Arrogance & Avarice - The story of the collapse of the Elk Grove-Sacramento Zoo relocation

The announcement of the collapse of the first major American Zoo project in over 30 years came a little more than three months ago. The April 30 joint announcement by The City of Elk Grove and the Sacramento Zoological Society, stating that the proposed $300-plus million was being put down like a rabid dog, came as a surprise to many people.

For the handful of people in Elk Grove, ElkGroveNews.net and ElkGroveDailyNews.com, the demise of the project was not that surprising. For this small group of people who closely monitor city activities, the announcement answered the question not of whether the project would be killed, but when.

As with other failures in Elk Grove, there was more to this story than was revealed in the announcement. In his recently released book, ElkGroveNews.net and ElkGroveDailyNews.com proprietor D.A. Gougherty, a longtime reporter of Elk Grove government and politics who covered the project from start to finish, takes a closer look at the unheard story behind why the project failed.

In Ambition, Arrogance, and Avarice - The Collapse of the Elk Grove-Sacramento Zoo Relocation Project, Gougherty provides a comprehensive analysis. From public document requests and frontline reporting, he examines Elk Grove's history of previous failed grand projects like building a soccer stadium in the hope of luring a Major League Soccer expansion franchise, and documents how the arrogance and ambitions of politicians and high-level public officials waste tens of millions of dollars of taxpayers' money.

Ordered this on line. 2/3 through it. A very insightful, well researched and somewhat ugly portrayal of this entire debacle known as the selling of the zoo to Elk Grove and its unsuspecting taxpayers. Thank you Kevin Spease. The rest…. Ugh🤮
