Mayor Scherman dressed down by fellow council members

During Wednesday night's Elk Grove City Council meeting there was an interesting exchange between Mayor Sophia Scherman and council members Jim Cooper and Gary Davis.

Scherman said that council members would not be going on an annual trip to Washington DC to lobby our local congressional delegation. Scherman seemed to imply that she was in favor cancelling the trip at the request of  Elk Grove's congressional representative, Republican Dan Lungren.

While Davis said he favored the cost saving measure in light of the fact the another trip would be made as part of the annual "Cap to Cap" regional lobbying effort, he nonetheless teed off on Scherman.

"Elk Grove has a congressional representative [Lungren] that has chosen to stick with his party and not go after requests," Davis said. "I don't think we should let him off the hook."

Davis also said he "doesn't buy the notion that we shouldn't be pushing for city's priorities because our congressman decides to put partisanship in front of representing the community."

Noting that he has supported Lungren in the past, a visibly irritated Cooper also pulled no punches in his criticism of the congress member saying his refusal to seek funding has hurt local governments.

"He does not believe in earmarks," Cooper said. "Other jurisdictions are bringing home special projects and getting local money and we aren't. And this isn't fair."

Cooper went on to say "I like Dan a lot, but he's dead wrong."

Watch the 10 minutes video - it is illuminating.

Ummm... let's see.... Davis and Cooper are Democrats complaining of Lungren's 'party politics'?? Good heavens, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I dislike party politics on the local level. Period! But Cooper and Davis and their relationship with the 'local's' makes their little spat almost side splitting funny. Oh... and I forgot to mention....lack of credibility. Especially since Cooper and Davis are trying to secure their own party's votes for their very own re-election wish. Political poo poo is all this is. How bad it smells depends on which side of the isle you're on. Party politics on the local level is wrong and ELk Grove voters have pretty keen senses. They'll sniff it all out come November.
