When the Elk Grove Planning Commission meets this Thursday night, one of the items on their agenda is a project that has generated considerable controversy even though it is just starting to work its way through the city's planning process.

That project, the so-called Moore Sheldon Center, is seeking to change zoning of a parcel on the northeast corner of Sheldon Road and East Stockton Blvd. from high density residential to light commercial. If rezoned, local developer Gil Moore said he intends to build a strip center with a McDonald's, deli, yogurt shop, gas station and a liquor outlet.

Although the project is just starting the planning process, it has generated controversy after Moore was able to change the city's zoning to give him the possibility of locating a billboard along nearby Highway 99 that was not permitted previously. Moore has donated heavily to four of the five current city council members, all of whom have said they support the project even prior to it appearing before them or the Planning Commission.

At Thursday's meeting the public will be invited to comment on the environmental impacts of the proposed project. The meeting starts at 6:30.

Did Chaires get her campaign contribution before this meeting?

The night Gil Moore first went to the podium during public comment and asked for the change in the sign ordinance is the night it was validated that the Elk Grove City Council could be bought. Even before Moore spoke one word, he had already given $20K to the Detricks. So no one wonder Steve Detrick jumped on how wonderful Moore and his project are.

Enjoy those ski trips and the bottles of wine Detrick that Moore paid for. You got them on the backs of the Elk Grove citizenry.

“Money and corruption are ruining the land, crooked politicians betray the working man, pocketing the profits and treating us like sheep, and we're tired of hearing promises that we know they'll never keep.” Ray Davies

Detrick is a prime example of local government corruption as its worse. . .

Anon 10:23....our opportunity to see our future candidate for council at work....most likely will give us insight into where she is headed. Imagine she will be treading carefully and trying to ask all the right questions the citizens expect to be asked, but in the end the campaign chest always wins out.

Which one of you is Lynn?

To poster above, I don't think any of these are from Lynn. Unlike most of us, she always uses her real name.

I agree w/ Frenchie.

Lynn never hides behind any tag. She always says what she means and stands behind it, like it or not.

- There are a few out there that share her points of view.

Anon.12:39: maybe you're Lynn... Good job throwing us off the scent... I'll give you 5 guesses who posted the Chaires comment, think back to the way the district 4 seat appointment went down.

So we want to "out" people in an attempt to deflect from the issue. Well, the "outers" read as being possibly from another local site....johnny, patty, tommie, stevie, etc. Might want to revisit that bullying legislation.

To this old lady, the essential question remains, "Has the process been followed?" I believe the answer is no. The actions of the planning staff would indicate that the directive was to find a way to give Gil Moore what he wants. At least three councilmen stated they approve of the project. How do you do that when the project hasn't even been put before the planning commission? Anybody smell that?

It will be interesting to see how Hobbs finagles the law so the council can avoid claims of bias before an actual hearing took place.

Just saw that Gil Moore is listed as one of the sponsors of Jim Cooper's campaign for State Assembly. What do you suppose he is trying to "buy" this time?

Lots of talk here but I was the only person to speak during public comment at the actual meeting.

Sarah Johnson said...

Wait until the actual hearing when I'm sure more people will speak. This was only to receive comments on the DEIR and many of us have already submitted written comments.

Hi Sarah, I know and hope that will happen. Just interesting to see online comments so often with little or no participation at the actual meetings. Only 4 people from the public spoke on the water park this last Wednesday.

As for the Moore project I've never understood the uproar about the freeway signage when the elephant in the room is the project is lame. Too much going on in a small space. Yet another McDonald's and right next to residential.

Lynn said...

To the above; the uproar about the freeway signage is the time and commitment of residents and city staff to write the ordinance. Residents did not want our city to be covered with signage; how visibly appealing is that? The lite up auto mall sign was the compromise that the sign ordinance would be respected and upheld. What the uproar; the hours spent on a community vision was simply undone by one developer. Regarding the water park; I attempted to get residents from the area to come; several are moving away, the newer residents don't understand the Laguna Ridge "plan" is unraveling... I save comments for the council meetings as I choose what meetings I want to spend time at.

That's because many of us have just given up any hope of saving this community from itself. Some of these issues are so HUGE, and I see no way to change the direction of our community.

Did anyone read the SBJ article on this project and Moore's comments. I won't editorialize here; I will let the reader judge for himself/herself.

Moore's quote is aimed at the "activists" and what they will think of him in the near future.

I already commented there. Directed my comments to the author of the article and his lack of research.

Sarah,

I so agree with you...many of given up and some have already moved away. How can we residents save the community from the elected officials and city leaders who benefit from sprawl, rezones....etc...and they have dollars to fund the campaigns. When I approached council to consider campaign finance reform a hush came over the room....next agenda item please. Now tell me for what reason would this not even be considered for discussion?.....I keep hanging onto the mustard seed of hope that something will change...

Lynn and Sarah, I didn't mean to imply I was in favor of the sign ordinance changing. It just seems everybody was focusing on that piece instead of this being an example of shoddy development. It's nothing innovative, nothing aesthetically pleasing, doesn't fit in with it's surroundings, won't bring jobs worth a darn, etc.
