Running on Empty - Elk Grove Police Apprehend Suspected Car Thief After He Runs Out of Gas

A suspected car thief was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Elk Grove Police following a pursuit and after the stolen car ran out of gas.

The incident began after patrol officers were dispatched to Emerald Vista Drive and Lujan Drive after receiving reports of a reckless driver. The reporting person provided a license plate number to the dispatcher.

A records check revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen by the Modesto Police Department. Responding officers located the stolen vehicle parked on the roadway occupied by 24-year old Jashneel Johnson.

When officers attempted to contact Johnson, he drove away in the vehicle and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit traveled 3.6 miles and terminated when the vehicle ran out of gas.

Johnson was arrested and booked into the county jail where he remains in custody on $90,000 bail. Arraignment is scheduled for this afternoon.
