If watching competitive eating is one of your guilty pleasures, then next weekend Elk Grove is the place to be.

As part of the Cosumnes Community Services District's annual Giant Pumpkin Festival, or simply the the GPF as it has come to be known in Elk Grove, world renown competitive eater Joey "Jaws" Chestnut will be the featured contestant in the highlight of the festival, the Pumpkin Pie eating contest. Chestnut is currently rated as the number one competitive eater in the world by the MLE - Major League Eating - and recognized as the greatest in the history of the sport.

Chestnut's visit will be a shot at redemption after last year's upset loss to Matt "Megatoad" Stonie. Last year Stonie, who like Chestnut hails from San Jose, beat his crosstown rival by slamming over 20 pounds of pumpkin pie.

Other notable competitors scheduled for the event include Miko Sudo, who is currently holds the top-rank in the female division. Other contestants in the 10-person field include rookie sensation Carmen Cincotti and Dixon-based Steve Hendry. Stonie is not scheduled to defend his title.

The pie eating contest, which as a purse of $5,000, is part of the annual GPF sponsored by the Cosumnes Community Services District. The two-day festival starts next Saturday, October 1 with activities held from 10 a.m until 5 p.m. at the Elk Grove Regional Park.

Among popular activities at the festival is the famous pumpkin weigh-off competition that takes place on Saturday morning. Admission to the festival is free, and there is a $10 parking fee.

More information on the festival is available here.
