Elk Grove Unveils Floor Plan For Senior Center, Veterans Hall

December 13, 2016 |

The long-awaited floor plan and design of Elk Grove's Veterans Hall and Senior Center were unveiled last night at a workshop held at City Hall.

The building, which will be called the Elk Grove Community/Senior Center will house the two facilities located in Elk Grove's Civic Center on the southeast corner of Big Horn Boulevard and Civic Center Drive in the Laguna Ridge neighborhood. In addition to the Community/Senior Center,  the Civic Center will be home to the City's aquatics center.

Presenting the information of the elements of the structure was Dawn Merkes of San Francisco-based Group 4 Architecture, Research and Planning Inc., who were the lead designers. Merkes was one of the architects involved in the design if the building.

In her presentation Merkes explained that Elk Grove's city staff met extensively with the Elk Grove Senior Center and the various Veteran groups to develop the plan. The original proposal had both organizations in separate, stand-alone structures, but as the plans progressed, it became apparent there was inadequate financing.

The building will have just over 29,000 sq. ft., and in addition to the Veterans and Senior facilities, the structure will include a dividable 10,000 sq. ft community hall featuring a catering and a fully-functional commercial kitchen, a gift shop, cafe and administrative offices. The Senior Center, which contributed $3 million in funding, will have access to about 5,200 sq. ft. while the Veterans will have 2,300 sq. ft for their uses.

Also attending the meeting was Elk Grove Assistant City Manager Jason Behrmann who said construction of the centerpiece of the Civic Center, the aquatics center, will start next year with an opening date by the summer of 2018. Construction on the Community/Senior Center will start late next year with a 2019 opening date.

In addition to funds from the Elk Grove Senior Center, financing is primarily being provided by Mello Roos feels levied on residential properties in the Laguna Ridge and Poppy Ridge neighborhoods. Total construction cost of Phase 1 of the Civic Center which includes the aquatics center and the Community/ Senior Center is pegged at $51 million.
