Bera Calls Syrian Missile Strikes 'Measured,' Says Trump Must Work With Congress

April 7, 2017 |

Rep. Karen Bass - 'We Cannot Bomb Our Way To Peace'

In reaction to President Donald Trump's missile attack ordered on a Syrian airbase in response their use of chemical agents, Rep. Dr. Ami Bera (D - Elk Grove) issued a statement regarding the attack early this morning.

Bera, now is his third term serving California's 7th congressional district, said the attacks perpetrated by the Syrian government are "horrific and cannot be tolerated." Calling the reaction "measured," Bera also said Trump should work with congress to address the situation.

The administration’s use of targeted missile strikes against a military target was a measured response to Assad’s use of chemical weapons against his own people," Bera's statement said. "If the President wants to pursue any further use of military force in Syria, he must work with Congress to authorize a comprehensive plan to address this complicated conflict. I stand ready to return to Washington.”

Bera serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and has served on the Committee since 2013.

Although Bera has taken a cautious approach, some of his fellow Democratic Congress members in the California caucus have taken a more assertive approach to Trump.

Last night Rep. Karen Bass (D - Los Angeles) called Trump's missile strike "short sighted" and said "we cannot bomb its way to peace." Like Bera, Bass called on Trump to seek congressional approval.

"The constitution is clear; if President Trump intends to increase our military’s involvement in Syria, he must come to Congress for an Authorization for Use of Military Force. Tonight, I join the growing calls for Congress to immediately debate the further course of action in Syria" Bass said in her statement. "If we truly care about protecting the Syrian people that were brutalized by the chemical attack earlier this week, we should open our country to Syrian refugees and engage in multilateral foreign aid efforts."

Rather than calling for Trump to work with them on Syria, Democrats should be screaming for impeachment. We're on the precipice of a repeat of Iraq; and once more we have a congress eager to play ball. The MSM isn't doing its job and is continuing to parrot administration talking points on chemical weapons; this is the aluminum tubing debacle all over again.
