Vice Mayor Suen Schedules News Conference, Will Announce Candidacy for Elk Grove Mayor

April 4, 2018 |

In a press release issued this morning, Elk Grove Vice Mayor Darren Suen announced that he will enter the race for Elk Grove mayor.

Suen, who has been long rumored to be interested in running for the office, will make his official announcement on Thursday, April 5, at the North State Medical School in Elk Grove at 3 p.m. With the statement, Suen will be taking on fellow Democrat and current Mayor Steve Ly.

Joining Suen at the event will be three of his fellow council members Steve Detrick, Pat Hume, and Stephanie Nguyen, and Elk Grove Unified School District Trustee Bobby Singh-Allen. Since Ly's ascension to the Mayor's office from the District 4 seat in the 2016 election, which is now occupied by Nguyen, he has been unable to secure any allies among his four city council colleagues.

With Suen's entrance, there are now three candidates seeking the office, which is elected for a two-year term. Earlier this year Democrat Tracie Stafford, who also ran for the position in 2016, entered the race.

The filing deadline for other candidates is August 10.  The general election will be on November 6.

UPDATE - The filing deadline is August 10, not July 15 as first reported.

Worst kept secret in town! As for future Elk Grove City Council meetings, AWKWARD! I hope by this press release, Mayor Steve Ly will finally get the message that the Elk Grove City Council is "not a team!" From day one, The Council Clique of Steve Detrick, Pat Hume, Darren Suen, and new addition, Stephanie Nguyen, have been out for Ly's blood.

And now it all comes full circle, Suen has a huge war chest thanks to his phantom challenger in Election 2016. Can't convince me this wasn't The Clique’s two-year plan; thinking those of us who pay attention were too stupid to figure it out.

Want to bet "The Clique" has already picked Suen's successor via the appointment process to District 1?
