In what is becoming a heated three-way race for Elk Grove mayor, one member of the Elk Grove City Council has thrown his financial support behind his council colleague.

According to a document filed today with the Elk Grove City Clerk's office, Council Member Steve Detrick made a $5,000 donation to Vice Mayor Darren Suen who along with Tracie Stafford, is hoping to unseat incumbent first-term mayor Steve Ly. The gift came from Detrick's campaign fund.

In his quest to unseat Ly, Suen has the support of Detrick and the two other council members, Pat Hume and Stephanie Nguyen. Suen, who is a member of the Democratic party, has been criticized for challenging his fellow party member and supporting Republican Hume, who is being challenged by Democrat Andres' Ramos.

Very early on during Ly's tenure as Mayor, it was apparent that Detrick, Hume, Nguyen, and Suen allied in opposing Ly. As the council moved closer to the forthcoming 2018 midterm elections, the fissure has widened.

UPDATE  - The story was changed to reflect that Detrick was neutral in the 2016 mayoral race. It was incorrectly reported he had endorsed Ly.
