Although an independent expenditure committee failed in its efforts to oust Steve Ly as mayor of Elk Grove, it was not for the lack of funding. That was made evident according to recently filed financial disclosures with the Elk Grove City Clerk's office.

That committee, dubbed the Alliance to Support the Middle Class raised $85,500 in its efforts to persuade voters to not vote for Ly's reelection to a second two-year term as mayor. By law, independent expenditure committees cannot coordinate campaign efforts with any candidate, but the ASMC was viewed as trying to benefit Elk Grove Council Member Darren Suen, who along with Tracie Stafford, was challenging Ly.

The committee's efforts first surfaced in mid-October in a series of negative social media and internet-based advertisements targeting Ly. The committee also sent mailers that targeted Ly as well as one of his political assistants.

Of the $85,000 raised, $37,804 was spent on the production of mailers, and $3,500 for "phone banking to oppose Steve Ly for Elk Grove Mayor." Additionally, $6,000 was spent with Facebook for digital media across its various platforms.

Even though the committee raised $85,500, it has an outstanding debt of $12,390 owed to KMP Strategies, Sacramento, for the phone banking activities and mailer production.

Major funding came from the following entities:

  • PG&E - $10,000
  • California Apartment Association - $10,000
  • California Association of Realtors - $20,000
  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers - $30,000

You can't tell me Steve Detrick didn't have a hand in this. I wonder what he is telling his employers, the PG&E executives along with his Union, and the Realtors (wife is a realtor) about what he probably sold as a sure thing!

Believe me! Believe me!
