In recent years Sacramento has ballyhooed itself as being as the centerpiece as the farm to fork capital. In spite of this self-proclamation, Sacramento rated lower than New Orleans - a city famous for unhealthy habits - as being vegan and vegetarian-friendly.

In a survey released today by WalletHub.com, out of 100 large American cities surveyed, Sacramento was 49th. New Orleans rated slightly better than Sacramento at 48th place.

The survey looked at four main categories in ranking cities. Those three categories, which included a total of 17 separate metrics,  included cost of groceries for vegetarians, the share of restaurants serving meatless options, and salad shops per capita.

Even though Sacramento has many farmers markets and numerous small-family owned farms it rated in 89th place in affordability. It also rated poorly in vegetarian lifestyle - which included complements such as per capita fresh vegetable and fruit consumption and GrubHub's ranking on likely hood to order a vegetarian meal - coming in 52nd place.

The one area where Sacramento scored well was vegetarian diversity - which includes items like the availability of farmers markets and community garden - the city was ranked in 19th place.

Portland was rated the best city while Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego were respectively ranked in 2nd, 8th and 9th places.
