Renaming Civic Center Drive to be considered by Elk Grove City Council

As part of ongoing efforts to create buzz for the city's fledgling civic center entertainment area recently renamed District56, the Elk Grove City Council will consider renaming the Civic Center Drive at their Wednesday, November 13 meeting.

Billed as the new heart of Elk Grove over the city's long-languishing Old Town area, the District56 name was chosen by the city council to attract events such as weddings and business conferences to the facilities. In addition to District56s current attractions include the swimming pool, the city is exploring the development of a shopping center and hotel on adjacent acreage.

Among the names the city council will consider are District 56 Drive, District 56 Avenue, District Drive, and District Avenue. Along with the District derivatives, city staff also included Celebrations but the Cosumnes Fire District, Elk Grove Police, the U.S Postal Service, and Sacramento County Fire, who under municipal code are required to approve, rejected the Celebrations name.

If the name is changed, four government-owned properties will be affected on the current Civic Center Drive between Bruceville Road and Laguna Springs Drive. The city council meeting starts at 6 p.m.

I just don't understand why we're so caught up in the name District 56. Texas has to love us for the name. It does not represent to me creativity, inspiration or productivity in which the City of Elk Grove says they represent. I expect the next thing I'll hear is renaming Elk Grove Blvd. to Costco Blvd.
