Video of wrong-way, suspected drunk driver on U.S. 50 released by South Sacramento CHP

The South Sacramento field office of the California Highway Patrol released a video of a wrong-way drunk driver on U.S. 50 in Rancho Cordova.

The incident occurred on Thursday, November 7 just before 2 a.m. The CHP Valley Division Air Operations helicopter caught the video of the driver heading westbound in the east lanes starting near Zinfandel Drive.

Two South Sacramento CHP Area units slowed down freeway traffic with lights and sirens activated as a safety precaution as the wrong-way driver approached State Route 99. The wrong way vehicle failed to stop as it approached the CHP patrol vehicles, and in consideration of the motoring public, two CHP patrol vehicles were intentionally rammed into the wrong-way vehicle, rendering it disabled in the center median.

The driver, Mauricio Santiago Lopez, was determined to be under the influence of alcohol. One of the CHP officers involved in the incident suffered minor injuries but declined medical treatment.
