District 3 Elk Grove City Council candidate Kevin Spease holds first campaign fundraiser

Even though he filed paperwork last summer to run for the District 3 seat of the Elk Grove City Council, Kevin Spease refrained from fundraising until last night when he held the first significant event for the 2020 election.

At a gathering of friends and supporters, Spease kicked off campaign activities with his event at the Sheldon Inn in Elk Grove. The meeting drew several dozen supporters.

In his introductory remarks, Elk Grove District 3 City Councilmember Steve Detrick lauded Spease's candidacy and his civic involvement. Detrick, who is finishing his third term, said part of his decision not to seek reelection was to wait until there was a candidate who could continue the work of the current council.

"Kevin is going to be an awesome councilmember," Detrick said. "He's got honesty, integrity; he does his homework when he is looking at projects."

From 2014 until last month, Spease was a member of the Elk Grove Planning Commission. Spease resigned from the position to concentrate on campaigning.

In his comments, Spease noted the support of not only Detrick but Elk Grove City Councilmembers Pat Hume, Stephanie Nguyen, and Darren Suen. Along with Detrick, Hume, and Nguyen, Suen's wife Denise Suen was in attendance.

"I am committed to Elk Grove," Spease told his supporters. "You've got to be committed to Elk Grove; that's what I bring."

Along with the city councilmembers, also attending were Cosumnes Community Services District Director Jim Luttrell and Elk Grove Planning Commissioner Frank Maita. Other notables appearing were former Elk Grove city councilmember and Mayor Gary Davis and Alvin Cheung, president, and chief executive officer of California Northstate University.

Spease, who ran for Mayor in 2016, is facing three opponents who have filed to date. Two of those opponents, Maureen Craft and Lynn Wheat, ran for District 3 in 2016 and the city's inaugural mayor's race in 2012, respectively. The third candidate is Amandeep Singh.

It will be noteworthy to see how much money Mr. Spease receives from Dr. Alvin Cheung. Regardless of the amount, Mr. Spease doesn't need to worry about addressing the CNU matter as I doubt most District 3 voters care one way or the other about the proposed hospital. A thank you care from Mr. Spease to Mr. Kevin Shenkman for pushing the by-district voting might be in order.

Mr. Spease never had much to say at the planning commission . Contributed little except for a yes vote on development. So we will have more of the same if he is elected to counsel. As a long time resident of the rural area as a bee keeper he must have moved to area 3 so that he could run for office. Mr. Detrick , having completed three terms, will now receive free medical coverage for life from the city.
