Junkets are bad, but if confirmed this one is outrageous - Elk Grove's Assemblymember Jim Cooper on free Hawaiian trip amidst pandemic

Junkets for elected officeholders while legal, never look good in the best of times. But a junket to Hawaii or anywhere amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic is outrageous.

As widely reported in the last few days several Democratic and Republican California lawmakers have participated in a paid junket that is taking place this week at a luxury resort in Maui for the Annual Independent Voter Project Conference.

Among those reported in attendance by KRON (see video below) is Democratic California Assemblymember Jim Cooper, who represents Elk Grove as the 9th District representative. The San Francisco Chronicle, citing the KRON report, said Cooper's spokesperson has not responded to inquiries as to the Assemblymember's whereabouts.

At a minimum, it is disappointing and irresponsible that Cooper found it necessary, not to mention tone-deaf to go on the junket during the worldwide pandemic that has adversely affected so many of his constituents. We hope Cooper is aware that Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has his own "French Laundry" problem this week, has the self-control to go into a two-week quarantine upon his return lest his selfishness put others at risk.

And politicians wonder why they are often, and we will say correctly, are held in such low esteem.  Just like pornography, people know hypocrisy when they see it.

Now I know why I haven't seen or heard anything about Cooper's annual Thanksgiving health fair and turkey giveaway.

Why are people acting surprised at this type of behavior by Cooper and others? I expected no less, that's why I didn't vote for him. Instead I chose Eric Rigard. When you reward incumbents by electing them to another term in office, they think they have carte blanche to engage in reckless behavior. Don't worry, Americans will forget this episode in 4 years and Cooper will get another term again. He's got more money and bigger signs.

Wait. When is he termed out? He will switch to the Senate.
