Press conference scheduled to announce recall effort against Elk Grove Unified School District Trustee

A Tuesday afternoon press conference has been scheduled in the parking lot of the Elk Grove Unified School District administrative offices to announce a recall effort of one of the Trustees.

At 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, plans will be laid out to launch the recall of EGUSD Area 6 Trustee Nancy Chaires-Espinoza. The recall effort is being organized by the EGUSD Parent Coalition, who earlier this year pressed the district for resumption of in-class instruction.

Among the reasons cited in the initial information provided about the effort, the recall proponents cite political contributions Chaires-Espinoza received from the Elk Grove Education Association, the collective bargaining unit for district teachers. Even though the donations are allowed, they claim Chaires-Espinoza received most of her 2016 campaign funds from the teacher's union and other unnamed political committees, creating a conflict of interest.

The initial statement said, "These contributions from the EGEA and political committees represent a significant conflict of interest and highlight her decision-making process to continually vote in favor of the teachers union over the interest of students and constituents in her district. She has mocked and denied parent inclusion in school reopening plans and voted to limit parent and student voices during board meetings."

Additional information claims the recall petition language has been approved by Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections, although this has not been verified.

Updated to reflect the recall effort is organized by EGUSD Parent Coalition.
