Resumption of in-person public meetings to be discussed by Elk Grove City Council

When the Elk Grove City Council meets on Wednesday night, one discussion item will be the resumption of in-person meetings. The item will be heard at the request of Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen.
Like other public government meetings in California, following Gov. Gavin Newsom's order in March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic worsened, in-person meetings were suspended. Since those orders, Elk Grove initially continued to broadcast its meeting over the internet and recently added the Zoom format to facilitate public comment.
In the staff report, four actions were outlined regarding the return to in-person meetings. Additionally, the report notes the city could defer any decision on resuming in-person meetings until Newsom rescinds the executive order for public meetings.
The report also noted given the city council's recess for the first July meeting, a hybrid meeting using in-person along with existing internet broadcasting and Zoom functions could be attempted at the July 24 meeting.
Wednesday's meeting starts at 6 p.m.

Outstanding idea. No reason that simple protocols can't be employed to allow the people back into "their house" to address their elected leaders and address their concerns. It's simply democracy. Many have been silenced by the disease with no way to be heard other than by to actually showing up at city doors. Democracy should work for all, not just the privileged or those with money.
Yes, open the "people's house" and let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sun shine in! Can you hear The 5th Dimension? That is the only way to bring transparency back. Easy to hide behind a computer monitor. Much different when accountability is right before you and the people can look their elected officials and staff in the eye.
