Cooper to seek California Democratic Party endorsement for 10th Assembly district

According to information posted this afternoon on social media, Assemblymember Jim Cooper (D - Elk Grove) will be seeking the California Democratic Party endorsement for the 10th Assembly District. Cooper currently represents the 9th District, but with this year's decennial redistricting, Elk Grove is now part of the reconfigured 10th District.

The information was posted by Amar Shergill, the state Democratic Progressive Chair.

Interestingly, Cooper has also filed a candidate intention statement expressing interest in running for Sacramento County Sheriff, an office he ran for and lost to current Sheriff Scott Jones in 2010. This week Jones announced he would make a second attempt to win a Congressional seat in the open 3rd District.

As part of his sheriff's candidate intention filing, Cooper had been actively fundraising for that campaign. However, on January 14, Cooper filed a candidate intention statement for the 10th District with the California Secretary of State.

According to Shergill's Twitter post, along with Democrats Dr. Tecoy Porter and Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra, who has formally entered the 10th District race and are seeking state party endorsement, Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen is also seeking the party endorsement. Nguyen has said she would formally announce her 10th District Assembly candidacy once Cooper announces his intentions.

With Cooper's posturing, Nguyen is losing valuable campaign time, given the June primary is just over four months from now. Guerra and Porter were both candidates for the 8th District California Senate seat but dropped out of that crowded race that at one point had five candidates and entered the Assembly race.
