New series - What they're saying: Politicians on social media

With the June 7 primary happening in about four months and the November general election in nine months, we are starting a new series called What they're saying: Politicians on social media.

If we have learned anything about social media and politicians in the Trump era, the medium offers voters an opportunity to gain a different perspective on officeholders and those seeking to enter that might not be otherwise obvious. Trump is the most extreme example of how an office seeker and then an elected official used social media, often as a weapon.

While Trump was an exceptional example of weaponizing social media, other lower-level politicians have used it for their purposes. While we will look at platforms like YouTube and Facebook, we will primarily look at Twitter to glean information about officeholders and candidates.

Our focus will be on Elk Grove and Sacramento regional candidates and elected officials, but we will also examined how other candidates are effectively using, or abusing, the platforms.
