UPDATED: Independent committee 'Californians For Jobs' takes aim at Dave Jones in competitive State Senate race

UPDATED 8 a.m. April 12 |

With just under two months until the June primary, a committee calling themselves Californians For Jobs and a Strong Economy has taken aim at State Senate District 8 candidate Dave Jones.

One of the tactics used is via Google advertisements. When doing a search for Dave Jones for State Senate, a paid advertisement opposing the former Assemblymember and California Insurance Commissioner appears at the top of the page.

The one page site, called Not Dave Jones, offers criticism of Jones dating to his days on the Sacramento City Council, Assembly, and Insurance Commissioner. Jones is running against Sacramento City Councilmember Angelique Ashby and Rafa Garcia.

According to the most recent financial disclosure dated December 31, 2021, Californians for a Strong Economy and Jobs received $1.8 million in donations last year and ended with $754,9833.
Among the many companies contributing to the fund last year included the following:

  • American Property Casualty Insurance  - $12,000
  • Amazon.com Services - $50,000
  • Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs State PAC - $20,000
  • AT&T Services - $36,000
  • CA Assoc. of Health Underwriters PAC - $20,000
  • California Apartment Association Political Action Committee - $50,000
  • Dart Containe - $15,000
  • Google LLC and Affiliated Entities - $20,000
  • PG&E Corporation - $95,000
  • Sempra Energy - $124,688

The Jones campaign did not respond to a request on the advertisements. The entire contribution report can be viewed below.

As reported in 2015 by CalMatters, Californians for a Strong Economy has long been influential with moderate Democrats like Assemblymember Jim Cooper. Like Cooper and a handful of other state Democratic legislators, Ashby is considered a moderate to conservative compared to Jones who is view as more progressive.
