Nguyen hits back at Guerra with attack mailer in contentious 10th California Assembly primary battle

On a day when one of the candidates in the contentious battle for the 10th District California Assembly launched an attack website, the other struck back with a mailer that arrived today for Democratic voters.

The volley of attack advertising between Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra and Elk Grove City Councilmember Stephanie Nguyen started when Guerra launched a website attacking Nguyen. Then, as luck would have it for Nguyen, today, voters received a mailer attacking Guerra.

Called "The Guerra Record," Nguyen lays blame for Sacramento's homeless problem saying, "under Guerra's leadership - homelessness in Sacramento continues to rise." Nguyen has hit Guerra with Sacramento's homeless population in this and other mailers.

Nguyen also attempts to push back on Guerra's questioning of her Democratic credentials. Citing a 2018 Capitol Public Radio News story, the mailer says Guerra was expelled from the Democratic Party of Sacramento County for supporting a conservative Republican. That Republican was Sacramento County District Attorney Ann Marie Schubert.

According to the story Guerra, along with former Sacramento City Councilmember Steve Hansen and Sacramento City Unified School District Darrell Woo, were voted off the Central Committee, not the party. Guerra, Hansen, Woo, and a large pool of Democratic officials, including Assemblymember Jim Cooper, Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, and Nguyen, endorsed Schubert.

On the mailer's flip side, Nguyen says Guerra is someone "desperate to move up the political ladder" and reiterates that "homelessness continues to rise" in Sacramento. Nguyen has made Sacramento's homeless population one of the main themes in her battle against Guerra.

According to various reports, with less than two weeks to the June 7 primary deadline, about five percent of Sacramento ballots have been submitted. With so many ballots outstanding, voters in the 10th California Assembly District likely haven't seen the last of the attack ads between Guerra and Nguyen.
