5 pounds, 11 ounces of ________, well, you can fill in the blank

Voting closes today for the California 2022 primary. Luckily for your local mail person and recycling bin, there will be a break until Labor Day from the omnipotent political mailers.

For an election where voter participation in California and Elk Grove, more specifically, will be near historic lows, some voters were swamped by mailers. We saved each mailer received for an informal analysis for the fun of it.

Instead of going to the recycle bin, we received 5 pounds 10 ounces of mailers. After collecting the mailers and separating them by offices being sought, could the competitiveness of a race be related to how many mailers Elk Grove voters received?

If race competitiveness is related to mailers, leading the pack with 1 pound and 15 ounces was the race for the District 10 California Assembly seat. Although there were five candidates, almost the entire pile was for two candidates.

While there were two mailers on behalf of Eric Rigard from the California Republican party, the rest were dedicated to the two leading candidates, Democrats Eric Guerra and Stephanie Nguyen.

About half of the mailers were from independent committees either propping up or tearing down Guerra and Nguyen. This is the most competitive race for Elk Grove voters using this simple analysis.

The next most competitive race based on the weight of mailers for Elk Grove voters is the District 8 California State Senate position. This entire batch was focused on two candidates, Democrats Angelique Ashby and Dave Jones.

After the voting tallies are finalized, we'll go back and see if there is a correlation between the amount of positive and negative mailers and the finishing positions of each candidate. Who knows, maybe we'll see a connection to how much or how little a candidate was attacked and its effect on their finishing place.
