Jones' polling shows big lead in District 8 State Senate race, Ashby calls it misleading says it's a 'tight race'
This week the Dave Jones campaign for State Senate District 8 released an internal poll showing he has a substantial lead over opponent Angelique Ashby.
According to the data compiled by Jones polling, the former California Assembly member and Insurance Commissioner leads Ashby by 17 percent among likely voters. The poll showed that 42 percent said if they were to vote on the survey day, they would be inclined toward Jones and 25 for Ashby.

"This poll shows that voters were not fooled by the $1.7 million spent by Big Oil and its allies lying about Dave Jones and his record. Their spending backfired," Jones campaign spokesperson Michael Soneff said. "Voters clearly figured out that Big Oil was trying to elect Angelique Ashby because she's on their side, and Dave Jones sides with people."
The polling conducted by Goodwin Simon Strategic Research said Jones enjoys wider name recognition, is "better liked," and had lower negatives than Ashby. Additionally, the polling summary said Jones is ahead with no party preference voters, registered Democrats, and splitting the Republican vote with Ashby.
The Ashby campaign responded to the survey claiming its a "tight race" against Jones and characterized the poll as misleading, ignoring the primary election results. Jones came in first place with 46 percent, Ashby 41, and the third Democrat in the race, Rafa Garcia, 12.
Ashby campaign spokesperson Katie Hanzlik also noted Ashy earned the majority of the Elk Grove vote. Elk Grove voters are more moderate than other portions of District 8, and several elected officials, including Cosumnes Community Services District Director Jaclyn Moreno, who is running for the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors have endorsed her candidacy.
"We believe Senate District 8 needs a problem solver who is pragmatic and builds bipartisan consensus - not another divisive career politician," Hanzlik said. "We look forward to the next election in November and hope to continue earning the support of Elk Grove residents."
Goodwin Simon Strategic Research research summary noted Garcia has endorsed Jones. Additionally, the summary claimed, "November voters who did not participate in the June primary are giving Jones a double-digit lead in the poll."
Both campaigns and supporting groups negatively portrayed their opponent during the primary campaign. Jones was described as a bobblehead career politician, while Ashby was tied to the oil industry.
Methodology: The survey of 658 voters was conducted between August 8 and August 12, 2022. We fielded the survey online via text invitations, and by land and cell phones. The margin of error for this survey is +/- 3.84% at a 95% confidence level. The sample was drawn from a list of registered voters in SD 8 who are likely to participate in the November 2022 election and have land and/or cell phone numbers listed in the Sacramento County voter file.
