Calif. Secretary of State Weber endorses Ashby for State Senate District 8

While endorsements can be given more credence than they are worth, in a battle of candidates of the same party, heavy-weight support from party members can tip the scales. That is the case in the hotly contested race between Democrats Angelique Ashby and Dave Jones.

Today Ashby announced California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber has endorsed her candidacy.

"Angelique Ashby has proven she has what it takes to tackle tough issues and deliver results by bringing people together," Secretary Weber said. "She will bring that same energy, problem-solving focus, and commitment to inclusion to the state legislature – I'm proud to endorse her for State Senate."

Secretary Weber is California's first Black Secretary of State and only the fifth African American to serve as a state constitutional officer in California's 170-year history. Before being appointed Secretary of State, she served four terms as an assembly member representing California's 79th Assembly District.

"Dr. Shirley Weber's legacy of fighting for equality and fairness is unrivaled," Ashby said. "She is a hero to many, including me, and it is an honor to have her support."

In the endorsement fight between the two Democrats, Ashby has earned the support of former Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov. Gavin Newsom. Jones is endorsed by U.S. Senator Alex Padilla and the California Democratic Party.
