Vargas wins Area 2 seat on Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees

EGUSD Trustee-elect Michael Vargas. |

Votes tallies released this afternoon confirm that Michael Vargas has won the Area 2 seat on the Elk Grove Unified School District Board of Trustees.

Vargas has 5,869 votes for 55 percent to his opponent Stephanie Spurlin's 4,778 for 45 percent. Vargas will replace Dr. Chrystal Martinez-Alire, who did not seek reelection after two terms.

Vargas won the seat by a large margin after running a relatively highly-visible campaign for the typically low-key school board races. Conversely, Spurlin did not actively campaign for the position and yet accrued 45 of the vote.

Countywide, there are less than 89,000 uncounted ballots, and the small share in the EGUSD Area 2 is insufficient for Spurlin to overtake Vargas.
