Elk Grove Vice Mayor Sergio Robles posted an emphatic message condemning the recent immigration raids in Sacramento. | |
In the aftermath of last week's U.S. Border Patrol immigration arrests at the Home Depot on Florin Road in Sacramento, Elk Grove Vice Mayor Sergio Robles has taken to social media to express solidarity with those targeted by the arrests and reassurance.
In the Facebook video below, the first-term District 4 City Council member reassured viewers that the Elk Grove Police Department is not participating in the raids.
"Our police chief [Elk Grove Police Chief Bobby Davis] has informed me the police department will not be working with ICE," he said. "And also, if you are in Sacramento, know there are resources. The Sacramento Fuel Network is a resource you can utilize. It's totally free, and it provides lawyers."
The Vice Mayor's comments on the immigration raids are unique in Elk Grove's 25-year history, where city council members have avoided wading into discussions of national politics. Robles, who self-identifies as a first-generation Mexican-American, has characterized recent raids "hunts" on a separate social media posting.
During his commentary, Mr. Robles was emphatic in his displeasure with President Donald Trump's immigration policies.
"It is bullshit that this is still occurring right here, right now, and it's finally hit us in our own home," he said.
The Vice Mayor's entire commentary can be viewed in the video.
This video message is not the first time Robles has weighed in on the controversial immigration raids. As seen in the second video below, immediately after Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen's June 10 State of the City address, Robles took the stage and spoke about the events that had happened in Los Angeles days earlier.
The California Values Act, which was signed into law in 2017, restricts local and state law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement, including assisting with immigration raids.

It is encouraging to see at least one member of the Elk Grove City Council take a stance on an issue of great importance. If we are to see change from the current policies, it will require a bottom-up approach, and local elected officials, especially the younger ones who can play the long game, must be part of this push.
It seems our local councilman has found a subject he is excited about. I share his concern. Local citizens are having their inalienable rights trounced by masked, armed and unidentifiable persons seemingly acting under the color of law, but are actually in violation of our most basic rights. We should all be alarmed by this. These are Gestapo tactics used by the Third Reich. Everyone is this country, illegal or not, has rights.
