Largely unreported nationwide increases in suicide suggests it might be related to foreclosure crisis

Early Wednesday evening a body was found in a car located at the Century 16 cineplex located on Big Horn Blvd. in Elk Grove.

Police reports say the unidentified male was in his mid 50's and died from an apparent self-inflicted shotgun blast to the head.

Though not reported or tracked nationally, there has been suggestion that an increased incidence of suicide may be related to the foreclosure crisis gripping many families. Writer Nick Turse has suggested as much in a story titled The Rising Body Count on Main Street: The Human Fallout from the Financial Crisis

Locally, Elk Grove News regularly monitors the Elk Grove Police Department's daily incident reports and as far back as we can remember, there have been no incidents as described in Turse's piece. Nonetheless, there are several reported cases of domestic violence weekly.

While the police reports do not detail the cause or reason for individual incidents, we believe it is reasonable to associate many of the incidents to economic difficulties like foreclosures or job loss.

It is nice, perhaps naive to think, but it would be good if all elements of the community could work together to help address and reduce this problem.
