2008 Elk Grove city council race stands high in historic presidential election

The 2008 general and presidential will be talked about for years.

Should Obama win, Americans will have elected a previously unknown politician who coincidentally is a minority.

Should McCain win, it would be the greatest political comeback since the '48 surprise victory of Harry Truman over Thomas Dewey.

In this environment, many would think that the down ballot races and items might lose the interest of voters. We think the race for Elk Grove city council will be one of thousands across our country that will defy what mainstream media pundits think and say.

The race for the three seats on the Elk grove city council have caught the attention of the people of Elk Grove.

Analysis and projections

District One:

Jim Cooper should easily win what would be his third term as a city council member over challenger LaWanna Montgomery. A couple years ago though, Cooper's prospects had dimmed considerably.

Cooper had been strongly criticized by a scathing Sacramento Grand Jury report for among other things, conflict of interest.

The Grand Jury report was followed by a spirited but unsuccessful recall election. Cooper appear to be vulnerable.

Cooper seems to have learned lesson from that whole incident.

When a Super Wal-Mart was proposed in Elk Grove, Cooper smartly opposed it. Fellow council members at the time were initially mute.

Cooper also spear-headed efforts on popular street car racing ban.

And most importantly, it seems to us that Cooper smartly distanced himself from fellow council member Mike Leary.

Fast forward to '08, with his reputation repaired, Cooper faces a weak opponent. While we commend Montgomery for throwing her hat into the ring, outside of calling for a change of leadership, she hasn't offered a platform or specific plans that would sufficiently motivate people to vote for her.

Cooper will easily be reelected. We would have liked Cooper to have faced a stronger candidate.

Check back for analysis on the two other city council races.

You did a fair assessment of District 1 city council race. Continue doing the good work you do. Democracy is best when results are not predictable. Although all logic points to Cooper, the voters have been put through many challenges in these troubled days. They will make their elected officials accountable for their action. Cooper will win by a good margin. But don't count La Wanna out yet. Black votes make up 1/3 of the ethnic voting block and with Obama in the presidential race, most of the African-American voters will come out in drove. Many of them may not like Captain Cooper, and La Wanna has been sending a message of change like Senator Obama for his presidential bid. I say District 1 is a toss up! But Cooper holds a lead because he is an incumbent. Being an incumbent these days is troubling.
