Second large retailer to exit Elk Grove; Gottschalks to liquidate?

Circuit City announced today that it will liquidate and close all of its 567 stores and dismiss over 30,000 employees. The development comes following a dismal Holiday selling season that hampered the electronic retailer who entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November.

Circuit City operates one Elk Grove store on Laguna Blvd. in the Laguna Gateway shopping center. Circuit City's coming closure, along with the recent closing of Mervyn's, leaves the city with another large empty retail space.

Aside from Circuit City and Mervyn's, Elk Grove faces other challenges on the retail front. Gottschalks just filed Chapter 11 and retail analyst indicate it too may be liquidated.

These closures come on top of scores of small retailer failures in Elk Grove.

What help would the mall bring, how many people can pay a mortgage when working on min wage???? Great Planning Lisa!
