Elk Grove City Council seeks bid for new transit provider

After four years of malfunctioning buses, frequent breakdowns and sweltering summertime bus rides, the Elk Grove City Council decided last night to end the transit contract with MV Transportation, operator of e-Tran.

The city contract with MV was initiated in January, 2005 after the city council voted to end it's contract with Sacramento Regional Transit. At the time, a commissioned report stated that Elk Grove paid more to RT than in services it had received.

The council voted 4-1 in favor of pursuing a new provider. Council member Jim Cooper voted against the item saying that many of the problems with MV were inflicted by the city.

In a surprising turn-about, council member Sophia Scherman voted to seek a new provider. Last year Scherman accepted $5,000 in campaign contributions from MV.
