The Elk Grove City Council will consider an ordinance limiting commercial hours of operations during its Wednesday, April 8 general meeting.

The ordinance is in response to widespread criticism in the city regarding a 24-hour Wal Mart proposed for Bruceville Road and Whitelock Parkway. Although Wal Mart has since agreed to alter their hours, it is not subjected to any current limits as the original project, a Target store, did not have any restrictions on its conditional use permit.

Likewise, the city does not have any specific ordinance restricting hours of operations. It is from this that the push for the ordinance came.

One of the main proponents of the ordinance on the city council is Steve Detrick who noted that currently a 24-hour operation is an automatic entitlement unless it is specifically stated in conditional use permit.

Detrick said that he hopes to strike a balance between the needs of the community and business and noted there may be certain areas, such as services near the highways, that a 24 hour operation is appropriate.

“I look forward reviewing all of the pros and cons to create an ordinance that will maintain that balance between business needs and residential needs,” Detrick said.
