The Elk Grove Charter Commission will hold their final regular meeting of the year tonight at the Elk Grove City Hall. The meeting will start at 6:00 PM.

Among the items slated for discussion are a selection of a new vice chair, a discussion of direction provided by the Elk Grove City council during their last meeting, a discussion of the final report to be submitted to the city council on January 13, 2009, a review of the draft charter language and a discussion of possible outreach efforts.

Could this be the last meeting before decommissioning the commission?

During last week's city council meeting when council member Jim Cooper wasn't expressing frustration with the commission's outreach efforts, he made it quite clear that the commission's work had be competed and that the time had come to turn the project over to the council. Other members of the council, notably former Mayor Pat Hume, prevailed and decided to let the commission present its final report and draft charter at the city council's next meeting on January 13, 2010.

As a long time advocate and strong supporter of a charter for our city, I am deeply disappointed in how our first attempt has faired. This go-around, the process has been tainted with politics, union intimidation and personal aspirations by some of its charter commissioners. As it stands now, I could not support any recommendations made by this commission nor any by our (current) city council. Perhaps the next time around we'll get the make-up of our commission right and our leaders will have the communities best interest in mind rather than their own. We are just not ready yet.

I believe you are right Mr. Stark! You pretty much covered the reasons why, therefore nothing more need be said.
