Grand Jury inquiry to be requested; Council member Davis defends Detrick
During tonight's Elk Grove City Council meeting Elk Grove resident Tom Waltman said he was filing an ethics complaint against council member Steve Detrick.
Saying "nothing could be more painful" than filing the complaint based on the city's code of ethics, Waltman said that Detrick was not acting in the best interest of the city.
Waltman's complaint seemed to be based on Detrick's position regarding the proposed St. Maria Goretti Church on Bradshaw Road.
"[The] issue of the Church should have been straight forward," Waltman said.
While Waltman revealed the ethics complaint during the public comment portion of the meeting, the harshest criticism came from three members of the City Charter Commission including its chair Jake Allen and commissioners Jimmie Johnson and Jake Rambo.
Allen asserted that Detrick has used his position as a council member to wage a vendetta against him and his family.
Allen also said that Detrick's actions against him were based on Detrick's desire to retire his campaign debt. Allen also said he would request a Sacramento County Grand Jury inquiry into Detrick's alleged ethics violations.
Johnson echoed Allen's assertion that Detrick's actions were based on his desire to retire campaign debt. Johnson characterized Detrick's actions as "outrageous."
Rambo accused Detrick of seeking to suppress the free speech of Allen's wife by circulating an e-mail from her.
Detrick responds; Davis defends fellow council member
For his part Detrick said that the complaint was groundless and said he welcomes a grand jury inquiry or any other investigation. "I don't think you are going to find anything," Detrick said.
Defending Detrick was council member Gary Davis who said he was "glad to serve with you." Davis said that the accusations seemed to stem from Detrick's concerns with the proposed St. Maria Goretti Church.
Davis said while the differences over the proposed 600-seat church seemed to be creating fissures in the community, the ethics complaint appeared to be motivated by personal differences the accusers have with Detrick. "Try to keep it from being personal," Davis advised Detrick's critics.
