Recently a renown conservative anti-tax group official was quoted saying “It’s pretty hypocritical for someone to be against the stimulus and then walk around handing out big checks,” said the vice president of public affair for the conservative anti-tax Club for Growth Andrew Roth. “I think Republicans who did that should be worried.”
Of late, there have been repeated sightings of anti-stimulus Republicans handing out enormous ceremonial checks for public works project in their districts or states praising the project. Perhaps the most blatant was by anti-stimulus stalwart Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana who handed out the Ed McMahon-sized-check with the governors’ name of on it.
Last July Republican Congressman Dan Lungren took part in a public work project groundbreaking ceremony in Rancho Cordova noting he “was pleased” with the project. In October Lungren praised a $127 million grant awarded to SMUD which was part of Obama’s stimulus package.
While Lungren knew better than to give out the ceremonial checks, what he failed to mention in both cases was that he actually voted against both projects he was praising.
We don’t begrudge Lungren for his vote per se. What we do begrudge him for is voting in exact lockstep with his party and then praising them.
If we are to believe Lungren supported both of these projects, why is he voting exactly the way his party leadership instructs him? The question really is this: Is Lungren carrying the water for big-money lobbying interests or is he looking out for the interest of the constituents?
In the words of the Club for Growth, voting one way and acting another way as Lungren has clearly done is “hypocritical.” Their words, not ours.
Time for Lungren to start worrying.

Just wondering is Ami Bera paying you directly from his campaign or is this an in-kind donation?
Perhaps you failed to notice that it is a Republican groupthat is calling Lungren out.
Show me where a Republican group is calling Lungren out. There is no mention in this article, no mention on the club for growth website, nothing anywhere that has this group calling Lungren out, only the headline typed by the anti-Lungren blogger.
Laziness does not serve one well, "James." Do a little research work.
Andrew Roth of Club for Growth made the statement in a January 28, 2010 article on Politico.com entitled 'GOP's cash-and-trash strategy.' Paragraph #10 of the article:
“It’s pretty hypocritical for someone to be against the stimulus and then walk around handing out big checks,” said Andrew Roth, vice president of public affairs for the conservative anti-tax group Club for Growth. “I think Republicans who did that should be worried.”
I believe an apology is in order to Ms. Johnson, as well as the author of this article.

Once again, where does it say anything about Dan Lungren? Yes Dan said that the project were good projects, he didn't take credit for them nor did he hand out the big checks.
The appology is owed to Congressman Lungren.
I believe that a large portion of the SMUD grant will offset the cost of smart grid projects that SMUD was implementing anyway. What we've done here is shift a portion of the cost of smart grid implementation from the ratepayer to the taxpayer.
I'm highly skeptical of this smart grid and I personally do not see it will ever ultimately reduce costs to ratepayers. I see it only about expanding the role electric service providers have in providing that service. In my view, smart grid will enable a handful of influential actors to ultimately benefit, and as such I see this as a worthwhile Republican value. That Lungren might directly decry stimulus yet praise its deployment, well, it doesn't seem too hypocritical to me.
