During the Wednesday, March 10, 2010 meeting of the Elk Grove City Council Mayor Sophia Scherman again demonstrates her lack of ability in conducting a city council meeting.
As you watch the video, you will see the Mayor is going to skip Vice Mayor Steve Detrick's opportunity to report on his activities and discuss future agenda items.
If that is not bad enough, less that two minutes later she is about to do the same thing to City Council member Gary Davis.
Fortunately Scherman's protege, City Council member Pat Hume, intervenes on her behalf. Notice in the video how twice Hume points towards Detrick and Davis for Scherman to remind her that yes, there are two other counil members to her right.
Normally, this would not be that big of a deal. But it seems that in the last few meetings Scherman has done this to Detrick more than once.
Is this a mental lapse or is she purposely slighting her fellow council members?
Let's hope that it was, as Scherman said, that she "lost track" and not some other thing at work. Perhaps the city ought to see if there is training available for Mayor Scherman that would instruct her on how to properly and legally conduct a meeting. That investment could save the city some embarrassment, and money, down the road.

Well... I'm not a huge fan of Ms. Scherman but sometimes even I lose track at city council meetings. Thankfully this time her snafu didn't raise a tax, establish a policy or change a rule. Or, for that matter, embarrass her much. Those meetings can be long and tiring. Maybe she was busy all day doing Mayoral stuff and was just tired?
How embarrassing, too many of "those" moments lately. Perhaps Mr. Hume could also include a training session in their meetings and eliminate further complications down the road. Hopefully she's not negotiating any business for the City.
Interesting the protege comment. Wasn't it Hume who nominated Scherman for mayor? All part of the deal to make sure that Detrick wasn't nominated. So the back doors deals continue, change out Soares and Briggs for Hume and Scherman.
But alas, Davis, Cooper and Detrick are smart enough to know what Scherman and Hume are up to and aren't fooled one bit by Hume's arrogant theatrics to control the council through Scherman.
She has lost her edge...how old is she? 72 year old? If you watch the videos or attend the meetings she is always very rushed..sometimes voting the opposite way she intends to vote because she is confused. Now we see why she has directed so much City money to the Senior Center. Conflict of interest???
Like Codex said, she seems to be confused when she cast her vote. She has been on the council for 10 years and the CSD for what, at least four years before that. You would think in that amount of time she would know the rules of the road.
