Children Protection Act to be Introduced as a Collaborate Effort to the Elk Grove City Council

Elk Grove Vice Mayor Steve Detrick and Council member Gary Davis, in collaboration with the Elk Grove Community Connection (EGCC) and Help Protect Our Children (HPOC), will introduce an urgency ordinance to establish a Child Protection Act for the city of Elk Grove at their July 28, 2010 Elk Grove City Council meeting during council comments and future agenda items.

The ordinance was generated following often emotional testimony during the Wednesday, July 14 meeting of the Elk Grove City Council meeting. During the public comment portion of that meeting on non-agenda items, several residents of the Elk Grove’s Cheer Court recounted stories of disturbing behavior of residents of a neighboring juvenile sex offender facility.

This ordinance is modeled after similar ordinances passed in San Diego and National City and will allow the city council to enact stricter statutes regarding sex offenders. At the July 14 council meeting, Council member Jim Cooper, a captain in the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, acknowledged it is on-going problem warranting constant attention.

Davis - urgent steps needed 

“The city of Elk Grove must protect its residents. Period. Especially our youth.” Davis said. “This urgency ordinance is designed to provide that protection. Its collaborative nature will ensure it is effective.”

The EGCC has brought forth many proposals in the past, including the street racing ordinance. “Public safety is a priority in our community, and as parents we must all take an active roll,” EGCC media spokesperson Linda Ford said.
