Elk Grove First proposal rejected
The delicate task of carving up new districts for the Elk Grove City Council will be conducted by an outside firm following a decision at last night's council meeting.
With very little deliberation, the council decided unanimously that the politically delicate task is best done by an outside consultant.
In succinct terms, council member Jim Cooper described the process as "demographer, RFP, [Request for proposal] citizen input."
Following the passage of measure K in November, in 2012 the city's five district will be reapportioned to four districts. While the council will still have five members, the fifth member will be a directly elected at-large mayor.
Council rejects "from" district ordinance proposal
In other business, with little discussion the council unanimously rejected a proposal that all city appointed boards or committee memberships be from the same district as the appointing council member. The idea was proposed at the last city council meeting by Elk Grove First president Paul Lindsay.

I never quite understood the reason for this proposal. As a current member of a City committee, I have seen the difficulty that exists when seeking individuals to serve. This "by district" proposal would make the task even more difficult and does not seem to serve any purpose at all.
