The new sidewalk will benefit the Elk Grove community by improving safety and access to the Elk Grove Adult Community Training Center (EGACT) and the Elk Grove Food Bank Services (EGFBS) Clothes Closet Warehouse. These organizations provide community services for adults with developmental disabilities and families with clothing needs, respectively.
The project also improves pedestrian and bicycle access to Baker Park and surrounding residential areas. No sidewalk was present prior to construction (before and after photos below).
As part of the improvements in the area, the City of Elk Grove partnered with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) to provide electricity to the Elk Grove Food Bank Services Clothes Closet Warehouse, located next to the Elk Grove Adult Community Training Center. The facility, where EGFBS volunteers work to organize and store clothing donations, previously did not have electricity.
The projects were funded with Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. CDBG funds are provided by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to CDBG entitlement communities such as the City of Elk Grove to develop viable communities by providing decent housing, a suitable living environment, and opportunities to expand economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.
