Just before Wednesday night's city council vote approving the $3.3 million incentive plan to bring 1,500 California Correctional Health Care Services jobs to the city, Elk Grove Councilwoman Sophia Scherman threw credit for the jobs bonanza to an unlikely source.
While much of the credit can go to the two person ad-hoc committee of Mayor Steve Detrick and Councilman Gary Davis and the efforts of city staff, not to mention the multi-million dollar inducement, colleague Sophia Scherman choose this significant opportunity to credit the efforts of Elk Grove publishing magnate Roy Herburger.
Watch the video below.
Scherman's efforts to divert attention to herself for any accomplishment is her modus operandi and not really surprising - par for her course if you will. So when Scherman heaped praised on Old Roy, it was surprising to turn around and see none other than Old Roy standing in the back of the room basking in Scherman's praise.
So was it coincidence that Dear Ol' Dad was there, and is Scherman's memory that sharp that she can recall a column written over 10 years ago and have the presence of mind to quickly put together these disparate facts and acknowledge her old friend who just happens to be standing in the back of the room where all can see him? (In the above video it should be noted later in the same meeting Scherman didn't know what agenda item the council was deliberating.)
As a regular attendee of the city council meetings for several years, it is the rare occasion that Old Roy shows up for a meeting - his beat of choice are local schools. The last time I can recall him attending a meeting was when the council recognized the Citizen's 100 years of operation.
So unless this just happened to be an impromptu acknowledgment, it sure appears that this was a premeditated act on both Scherman and Herburger's part. It is not surprising for Scherman, but Old Roy should hold himself to a higher standard.
As someone who fancies himself as a true old school newspaperman, this was a disappointing act of self-congratulations, if in fact he even deserves any credit to start with. This self-promotion should be left to the Donald Trump's of the world not those following in the footsteps of Ben Bradlee or Edward R. Murrow.
No wonder the media is held in such low esteem by the general public.
