Criticized over police vehicle maintenance contract, lawsuit

If some of Elk Grove's city council meetings can be described as marathon sessions, last night's meeting can be best classified as a sprint.

With only two items on the regular agenda and no planning items, the meeting was over in less than 45 minutes. Once the council got down to the two agenda items, the council only took about six minutes to wrap up business.

In those six minutes the council decided against a request for a fee waiving variance application and appeal fees totaling $5,397 for a project on Wrangler Drive and appointed two members to the city's multicultural committee. Mayor Jim Cooper appointed Jeana Crawford and council member Sophia Scherman appointed Lorna Powell.

Although the meeting was conducted quickly, the council was criticized during the public comment section over a recent lawsuit filed against the city by Downtown Ford. The lawsuit is regarding the police vehicle maintenance contract the city council awarded to Elk Grove Ford even though Downtown Ford was the apparent low bidder.

Calling the awarding of the contract to Elk Grove Ford a "sweetheart deal," Elk Grove resident Kathy Lee expressed concern over how the contract was awarded to the local dealership, particularly in light of the recent $500,000 subsidy they received from the city.

"My tax dollars were not spent very wisely," Lee said.

The next city council is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25 at city hall.

Thank you council for wasting my tax dollars by awarding this contract to the high-bidder, Elk Grove Ford, and setting us up for the ensuing lawsuit; more of my money wasted. Pat Hume's deliberation was over-the-top and just reinforces the case for Downtown Ford. Why the heck did people vote for him a second time and, more importantly, how many more lawsuits will be brought against Elk Grove because of him?

What is the cost of driving to downtown every time you need an oil change? In milage, labor hours, loss of productivity.
