The City of Elk Grove has installed a new red light enforcement camera that will go live tomorrow.

The camera has been placed at the intersection of Elk Grove-Florin and Bond Road and will go live at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

The good news for violators is that there will be a 30-day grace period in which Elk Grove Police will mail violators warning notices. After that the ticket will be $470.

“Photo enforcement has a greater deterrent effect if drivers are aware it’s out there,” Lieutenant Paul Solomon, Program Manager said. “The Elk Grove Police Department wants to make sure that drivers know we are using photo enforcement and that they have time to learn about this new safety program.”

The intersection of Elk Grove Florin Road and Bond Road was selected for the red light camera program based on a survey last year that indicated the intersection ranked high in red light violations along with traffic collisions.

With this installation, there will be five traffic camera s in operation in the city. The other cameras are located at Elk Grove Blvd. and Bruceville, Laguna Blvd. and Franklin Blvd, Laguna Blvd. and Bruceville and Laguna Blvd. and Laguna Springs Drive.

Elk Grove’s red light camera enforcement program is administered by Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc., an Arizona-based provider of traffic safety photo enforcement. Redflex is contracted to provide similar successful programs in Arizona, California, Colorado, North Carolina, Ohio and Oregon.

Anyone notice how short the yellow lights stay on for left turn lanes at these camera intersections? I had just crossed the crosswalk line when the light turned yellow on a left turn lane at EG-Florin/EG Blvd, and halfway thru the intersection the light turned red. Makes you wonder if they tinker with the timing to increase revenue.
