Does Elk Grove Want Its Own FM Station?

Elk Grove has 10% of the population of Sacramento County. You'd never know it to listen to or watch local broadcast stations. If no one is murdered or there's no high-speed chase down Highway 99, you won't get much Elk Grove news, and no community affairs.

It doesn't have to be this way. A new ruling by the FCC is opening up the FM dial to new Low Power FM (LPFM) Radio licenses. See the News Release.

What does this mean for Elk Grove? It means that our city could have its own radio station. It would have to be community run, non-profit, educational, and represent the needs of the community.

It could be the exact kind of thing to help Elk Grove become the city we want.

The station could start broadcasting as early as 2014.

This can't happen without local involvement. Community Groups, City Leaders, and the general public will have to get involved. They will have to WANT it.

So, step one is to be heard and plug in.

Should Elk Grove have its own station? In short, it would be great addition to the city.

It will take a great effort to launch it and sustain it. i.e. fundraising and getting sponsorship. But it can be done.

Beyond fundraising, it will take a large cadre of volunteers who will be needed to provide programing and management. I think it is an idea worth exploring.

This might be a once in decade opportunity to launch a community-owned radio station that focuses on the needs and interests of Elk Grove.

I woulld love to explore the idea. How to keep it impartial and open to everyone?

Sarah, I hosted a weekly show for three years at lpfm in Oroville so I have a little experience in the area.

Being a non-profit community owned station, they did their best to have a variety of views on the air. All were welcome.

There were several music shows ranging from bluegrass to reggae to mainstream varieties of music.
Also there were a number of non-English talk shows.

The anchor of the station was "Democracy Now" which gave the station a certain appearance. But having that programing was instrumental for fundraising.

Nonetheless, this station had a diverse range of voices represented. As I understand this station is now in the process of become a full signal FM station much like KMVR in Nevada City.

I can see the Group Of Five trying to infiltrate and exploit to their political advantage.
